In summer every year, something remarkable happens in North Bay. As the evenings warm and the lake begins to shimmer at sunset, millions of delicate-winged insects emerge from the bottom of Lake Nipissing and given they are highly attracted to light, make their way in swarms to the cities streetlights and settle on storefronts along the waterfront. Locally known as shadflies (also known as mayflies or fish flies), their arrival sparks conversation, curiosity – and sometimes complaints.

But what if, instead of being repelled, we chose to celebrate them? After all, these fascinating creatures are short-lived and sign of a healthy eco-system – so these visitors deserve a little appreciation – let’s find out some fun facts about Shadflies.

1. They’re Named After a Fish

The Canadian name “shadfly” comes from the Maritime fish, the shad. The migration of shad up eastern rivers historically coincided with the mass hatch of these insects – and the name stuck.

While technically a type of mayfly, in Northern Ontario they’ve earned their own local identity. Like so much of North Bay’s culture, even our insects carry a story rooted in nature and history.

2. They’re a Sign of a Healthy Lake

This may be the most important reason to celebrate them.

Shadfly larvae live underwater and cannot tolerate high levels of metals or pollution. That means a large hatch is actually a powerful indicator of a clean, healthy lake or river ecosystem.

When you see shadflies along the shores of Lake Nipissing, you’re witnessing proof that the water system is thriving. Their presence is environmental reassurance – nature’s way of saying things are in balance.

In other words: the bigger the hatch, the better the health of our lake.

3. They Symbolize the Brevity of Life

Shadflies have been used in art and literature as symbols of life’s fleeting beauty – and for good reason.

The adult insect lives for only about 24 hours after hatching. They emerge, swarm, mate, lay eggs, and complete their life cycle in a single day.

It’s a powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the moment. In a place known for sunsets over Lake Nipissing and peaceful shoreline walks, shadflies offer an unexpected but meaningful lesson: life is short – soak it in.

4. They Feed the Ecosystem (and Us!)

Shadflies are an incredibly important food source for fish, birds, and other wildlife. In fact, their emergence provides a seasonal buffet for the entire ecosystem.

Healthy fish populations – including those prized by anglers – rely on this burst of protein.

Even more surprising? In some cultures, dried insects are ground into protein-rich powder and added to food. While that may not be on most North Bay menus, it highlights how nutrient-dense and valuable they truly are.

They’re not pests – they’re nourishment.

5. They’re So Big, They Confuse Satellites

In some areas, shadfly swarms are so massive that weather satellites have mistaken them for storm clouds.

Think about that.

The hatch can be so significant that it shows up like a weather system on radar. It’s one of the most dramatic and unique natural events of the season – a phenomenon that draws attention well beyond our shoreline.

That’s not gross. That’s impressive.

6. Yes, They Can Be Slippery — But They’re Harmless

Occasionally, large accumulations of shadflies on bridges and roads can create slick surfaces. Municipal crews are well-prepared for seasonal clean-up, and the hatch itself is short-lived.

Most importantly, shadflies do not bite. They don’t sting. They don’t damage property. They don’t even have functional mouths as adults.

Their entire purpose is reproduction and completing a natural life cycle – and then they’re gone.

A Celebration of Nature’s Rhythm

Living in a four-season destination like North Bay means embracing nature in all its forms – brilliant fall colours, snowy winters, spring blooms, and yes, shadfly season.

Rather than viewing them as an inconvenience, we can see them for what they truly are:

  • A sign of clean water
  • A vital part of the food chain
  • A fascinating natural spectacle
  • A reminder to appreciate fleeting moments

They are part of the rhythm of the lake and the story of our city.

So the next time you see shadflies dancing in the evening light along the waterfront, pause before turning away. Look closer. You’re witnessing one of Northern Ontario’s most extraordinary natural events – proof that our environment is healthy and alive.

In North Bay, even the smallest creatures have a big story to tell.

North Bay is home to both delicious worldly cuisine and beautiful outdoor space. The only thing better than both individually, is both together! So, grab your blanket, your basket and your picnic. So, whether you choose one of the six great picnic spots detailed below or select one of your own, make sure you to check out these Pop up Picnic special to your day and enjoy beautiful North Bay outdoors.

Kiwanis Bandshell

Picnicking at the Kiwanis Bandshell (map location) is is a perfect way to soak up the vibrant summer atmosphere. Goulet’s Golden Mile

Just next door to the Kiwanis Bandshell is the Goulet Golden Mile (map location) named after former North Bay Mayor Bruce Goulet and often listed as the “Best place to view a sunset in the city”. The Goulet Golden Mile is a beautiful stretch of beach and green space that is meant to be enjoyed by all. The catalyst for lakefront development, Goulet Mile is derived from Mayor Goulet’s vision and has turned into one of the most aesthetic parts of North Bay, thus making it the one of the best spots in the city for your next picnic.  The Goulet Mile is a perfect combination of beaches, green space and gardens as far as the eye can see.  You can stroll around and sprawl out in the sun or the shade with your picnic blanket as the lake breeze blows over you. There are picnic tables scattered throughout the area as well as park benches to sit, relax and catch a glimpse of a breathtaking sunset over Lake Nipissing.   Several free parking lots line Memorial Drive and connect directly to this area, multi-use pathways and interlock walkways.

One of the best locations to enter Lake Nipissing, Champlain Park is a perfect place to picnic. Go in the day and you can take advantage of a playground, swimming access, and plenty of room to roam all while admiring the beautiful view. You may even want to stick around into the evening and witness a classic Lake Nipissing sunset with one of the prettiest views you will ever see. Located at the mouth of the historic LaVase River, this picnic spot blends comfort, aesthetics, and history. Check out this notable picnic spot at the south end of Premier Road.

Sunset Park

Sunset Park is full of green space, paved pathways, benches, and tables to suit your picnic needs. Whether you prefer sun, shade, or a little of both, we’re confident you can find it all at Sunset Park. You can also find a water refill station in addition to bath/change rooms, so be sure to pack your swim gear and beach toys.  You can also bring the kids and they can play on the nearby playground for more endless, summer fun. To access Sunset Park, make your way down Sunset Blvd. and start searching for the perfect spot to set up.

Pow-wow Grounds Geography

At Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow, there is an arbour in the middle of the dance circle, and that is where our drummers and singers will be found.  You are welcome to visit the space, but please don’t touch anything without the express permission of the people taking care of the items.

The dance circle is where you will find the dancing happening, and EVERYONE is invited to dance during Inter-tribals, and there are all kinds of special dances throughout the day for you to watch and learn about. In this area, we dance in a clockwise direction, following the sun’s path.

At each of the 4 directions, there is a doorway into the dance circle. Please keep clear of them (don’t sit in them) and be mindful that our traditional male dancers will occasionally stand in them for some songs to protect the dancers during a particular song. The arena director will ask you nicely to move.

Honoring Tradition:

Central to the pow-wow experience is the Grand Entry, scheduled for noon on both days. Here, the Eagle Staffs, representing various groups and communities, lead the procession, accompanied by speeches from local dignitaries and Elders. A special honor song for Veterans invites participation, emphasizing the inclusive and respectful atmosphere of the event.

Regalia

The dancers wear regalia while they are dancing, not “costumes.” Please don’t touch any regalia without the permission of its wearer. There are many kinds of regalia, and at the pow-wow is your opportunity to learn about many of them.

Inside one tipi is a sacred fire burning, and please respect the fire. Our fire starts at sunrise on Saturday with a ceremony (everyone is welcome), and burns until the end of the event Sunday, under the constant supervision of the firekeepers. While in there, you can smudge with sage; a firekeeper can help you learn how. The fire is for medicines only and is like a direct line with the spirit world and our ancestors. No garbage or waste is put in the fire, or pictures are taken of the fire.  Again, this is a time to take a special moment to be present and perhaps put an offering in the fire. Our Medicines (sage, cedar, sweetgrass and tobacco) are available to do so.

Browse the vendor’s booths

When buying from the artisans, you support Indigenous families and their communities. Many of our artisans carry a great deal of cultural knowledge and specialized skill in making items. This year we have over 50 booths, so there will be plenty to choose from. If you’ve ever wondered if something is genuinely indigenous, look no further!

Taking Pictures

Pow-Wows are a visual dream when it comes to taking pictures; the colours and movement are like nothing else. Please listen to the MC, as there are certain times when you will be asked to put your camera away, like during Grand Entry or a particular song. Take that time to be in the moment and be with everyone around you. It’s often a powerful moment, that can’t be described in words. As to taking pictures of dancers when they are not in the dance circle, please be sure to ask first. Most people are happy to!
