North Bay is home to both delicious worldly cuisine and beautiful outdoor space. The only thing better than both individually, is both together! So, grab your blanket, your basket and your picnic. Put on your swimsuit, your sunscreen, and your hat. Pick out a book or your favourite game. Get ready to relax in the sun (or the shade) while you fill up on some tasty treats and eats. Not sure where to go? Worry not! Here are six of the best picnics spots the Gateway City has to offer.

Pop Up Picnic

During summer, as part of Taste The Bay, six local restaurants have curated a special picnic for you to enjoy the outdoors in North Bay. So, whether you choose one of the six great picnic spots detailed below or select one of your own, make sure you to check out these Pop up Picnic special to your day and enjoy beautiful North Bay outdoors.

Kiwanis Bandshell

Picnicking at the Kiwanis Bandshell (map location) is is a perfect way to soak up the vibrant summer atmosphere. Nestled along the city’s scenic waterfront—located just next to Shabogesic Beach, the kids’ playground and the Kings Landing Pier—the bandshell comes alive with the free Summer Concert Series and Arts and Culture Nights that showcase local talent and touring performers. Bring a blanket, pack your favourite snacks, or grab some takeout from one of the nearby downtown eateries, and settle in for an evening of live music under the open sky. With children happily playing at the playground, the sun setting over Lake Nipissing, and the sound of music drifting across the lawn, it’s a quintessential North Bay summer experience that’s both relaxing and community‑driven. Goulet’s Golden Mile

Just next door to the Kiwanis Bandshell is the Goulet Golden Mile (map location) named after former North Bay Mayor Bruce Goulet and often listed as the “Best place to view a sunset in the city”. The Goulet Golden Mile is a beautiful stretch of beach and green space that is meant to be enjoyed by all. The catalyst for lakefront development, Goulet Mile is derived from Mayor Goulet’s vision and has turned into one of the most aesthetic parts of North Bay, thus making it the one of the best spots in the city for your next picnic. The Goulet Mile is a perfect combination of beaches, green space and gardens as far as the eye can see. You can stroll around and sprawl out in the sun or the shade with your picnic blanket as the lake breeze blows over you. There are picnic tables scattered throughout the area as well as park benches to sit, relax and catch a glimpse of a breathtaking sunset over Lake Nipissing. Several free parking lots line Memorial Drive and connect directly to this area, multi-use pathways and interlock walkways.

There is space in the sun or space in the shade depending on which you prefer. Got a furry friend? Champlain Park also has a dog park where your pup can run and play while you lounge the day away. You may even want to stick around into the evening and witness a classic Lake Nipissing sunset with one of the prettiest views you will ever see. Located at the mouth of the historic LaVase River, this picnic spot blends comfort, aesthetics, and history. Check out this notable picnic spot at the south end of Premier Road.

Sunset Park

Sunset Park is full of green space, paved pathways, benches, and tables to suit your picnic needs. Whether you prefer sun, shade, or a little of both, we’re confident you can find it all at Sunset Park. You can also find a water refill station in addition to bath/change rooms, so be sure to pack your swim gear and beach toys. You can also bring the kids and they can play on the nearby playground for more endless, summer fun. To access Sunset Park, make your way down Sunset Blvd. and start searching for the perfect spot to set up.

Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow in North Bay

The beating heart of Indigenous culture comes alive at pow-wows, offering a vibrant tapestry of traditions, dances, and community spirit. In North Bay, the Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow, hosted by the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre (NBIFC), promises to be a celebration like no other. The NBIFC marked its 50th anniversary last year, and this year’s event on June 7th and 8th at Lee Park is a testament to half a century of fostering friendship and understanding.

A Cultural Extravaganza:

Pow-wows are more than just gatherings; they are windows into the diverse Indigenous cultures spanning Turtle Island (North America). Each pow-wow reflects the unique spirit of its community, ensuring no two events are exactly alike. The Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow embraces this diversity, inviting people from all backgrounds to come together to learn, share, and celebrate. Maamwi Kindaaswin in Ojibwe means “To learn together”.

What to Expect:

Pay attention to announcers.

Led by Master of Ceremonies Bob Goulais, an Anishnaabe from Nipissing First Nation, attendees can anticipate a day filled with positive energy, laughter, and new connections. From explanations of dances and songs to coaching on proper etiquette and protocols, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. With over 50 Indigenous vendors offering their wares, including mouthwatering Indigenous tacos and refreshing lemonade, the event promises to tantalize the senses. So be sure to listen to the announcements and take note of what’s going on and particularly when he asks you to sit or stand for example please stand for Grand Entry (if you’re able) and the other songs and dances.

Pow-wow Grounds Geography

At Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow, there is an arbour in the middle of the dance circle, and that is where our drummers and singers will be found. You are welcome to visit the space, but please don’t touch anything without the express permission of the people taking care of the items.

The dance circle is where you will find the dancing happening, and EVERYONE is invited to dance during Inter-tribals, and there are all kinds of special dances throughout the day for you to watch and learn about. In this area, we dance in a clockwise direction, following the sun’s path.

At each of the 4 directions, there is a doorway into the dance circle. Please keep clear of them (don’t sit in them) and be mindful that our traditional male dancers will occasionally stand in them for some songs to protect the dancers during a particular song. The arena director will ask you nicely to move.

Honoring Tradition:

Central to the pow-wow experience is the Grand Entry, scheduled for noon on both days. Here, the Eagle Staffs, representing various groups and communities, lead the procession, accompanied by speeches from local dignitaries and Elders. A special honor song for Veterans invites participation, emphasizing the inclusive and respectful atmosphere of the event.

Regalia

The dancers wear regalia while they are dancing, not “costumes.” Please don’t touch any regalia without the permission of its wearer. There are many kinds of regalia, and at the pow-wow is your opportunity to learn about many of them.

The tipis and sacred fire

Inside one tipi is a sacred fire burning, and please respect the fire. Our fire starts at sunrise on Saturday with a ceremony (everyone is welcome), and burns until the end of the event Sunday, under the constant supervision of the firekeepers. While in there, you can smudge with sage; a firekeeper can help you learn how. The fire is for medicines only and is like a direct line with the spirit world and our ancestors. No garbage or waste is put in the fire, or pictures are taken of the fire. Again, this is a time to take a special moment to be present and perhaps put an offering in the fire. Our Medicines (sage, cedar, sweetgrass and tobacco) are available to do so.

Browse the vendor’s booths

When buying from the artisans, you support Indigenous families and their communities. Many of our artisans carry a great deal of cultural knowledge and specialized skill in making items. This year we have over 50 booths, so there will be plenty to choose from. If you’ve ever wondered if something is genuinely indigenous, look no further!

Taking Pictures

Pow-Wows are a visual dream when it comes to taking pictures; the colours and movement are like nothing else. Please listen to the MC, as there are certain times when you will be asked to put your camera away, like during Grand Entry or a particular song. Take that time to be in the moment and be with everyone around you. It’s often a powerful moment, that can’t be described in words. As to taking pictures of dancers when they are not in the dance circle, please be sure to ask first. Most people are happy to!

photo credit: Lindsay Sarazin – Wolf Eye Productions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

A Pow Wow is a spiritual experience for those dancing and drumming, but you may not fully understand what’s happening if you’re new to these events. If you have any questions, just ask!

Plan Your Visit:

Whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town, the Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow offers an unforgettable experience for all ages. With no admission fee, attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs ,refillable water bottles, and sunscreen for a day of celebration and connection. As well local hotels are offering discount codes, so be sure to take advantage of them!

Accessibility and Amenities:

Located at Lee Park, the pow-wow offers a central venue for festivities. For those needing transportation, a free shuttle service from Northgate Square ensures easy access. Additionally, amenities such as a water truck for water bottle refills and nearby beach access add to the convenience and enjoyment of the day.

From the lively dances to the rich cultural exchange, it’s an event that embodies the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Indigenous traditions and create lasting memories in one of North’s most beautiful settings.

Community Guidelines:

To maintain the cultural integrity of the pow-wow, attendees are reminded to refrain from bringing alcohol or drugs onto the premises. Additionally, while furry friends are cherished, it’s best to keep them at home or away from the pow-wow grounds. The MC usually takes the time during the day to explain why this is, so be sure to keep an ear out, its an important thing to understand.

In a land of a 1000 lakes and waterways you can bet that North Bay can pull off one of the best canoe races in the country! Since 1976, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority has been doing just that. The Mattawa River Canoe Race is a tradition that has attracted paddlers to North Bay, Ontario on the last Saturday in July before the long weekend for more than four decades to take on the challenge along this spectacular Canadian Heritage River

The Mattawa River is an ancient water highway that served as an important trade route for indigenous nations for thousands of generations before European contact in the 1600’s. And, for another two centuries, the Mattawa River was the primary route for exploration and the fur trade for voyageurs, couriers de bois and lumberman as they ventured deeper into the wilds that would become Canada.

Today, the 64 km canoe race from Olmsted Beach on Trout Lake in North Bay to Mattawa Island in the Town of Mattawa celebrates the Mattawa River’s long human history. With five mandatory portages skirting waterfalls and dams, and up to 7 other portages depending on water levels on race day, the Mattawa River Canoe Race is a challenging test of endurance, perseverance and determination. A shorter, 13 km Family/ Junior Race is also on the roster for burgeoning paddlers from Campion Rapids at Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park to Mattawa Island.

The race attracts all levels of paddler with categories for the fastest Pro (Marathon) racers to recreational paddlers. Marathon canoers have the advantage of a longer, sleeker, feather-weight canoe to keep them cutting the water at top speeds. Equally as fast on portages, these racers are a sight to see sprinting with canoe overhead over rocks and roots that are plentiful on the many portages on the race course. The record set for the fastest finish was in 1995 at 5 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds! To put that in perspective, recreational paddlers finish the race on average in 10 to 14 hours.

The race has evolved over the years with new categories added like Kayak and Stand Up Paddle Board. In celebration of the river’s heritage, there is even a Voyageur Canoe category where eight brave souls take on the challenge using a 300 pound replica voyageur canoe. A slight advantage would be that the modern-day voyageurs aren’t hauling an additional 160 pounds each of provisions and trade goods like their ancestors 400 years ago.

Other modern-day luxuries plentiful in North Bay are the many eateries offered in the city whether fueling up the night before the race, a treat for non-paddling companions during the race, or as a welcoming place to share stories post-race. A popular lakeside experience is Average Joe’s Eatery & Patio with delicious food and stunning views of Trout Lake. Ice-cream, homemade fudge and local treats are available at The Green Store also on Trout Lake. Or, for a quick grab-and-go snack Orchards Fresh Food Mart has prepared meals, fresh produce and delectable treats for every palette.

The Mattawa River Canoe Race has become a tradition for many paddlers with a handful of seasoned paddlers participating in 30+ races over the years. It is the stunning scenery, comradery with fellow racers and the physical challenge that keeps paddlers coming back. Whether it’s a bucket list challenge or an annual tradition, this is the canoe race of the summer.

With a deep connection to Canadian history, a prominent part of the identity of this waterfront city, Lake Nipissing presents an array of four-season activities for residents and visitors alike. Here is a list of eight fun facts which you may not have known about this stunning lake just north of Muskoka:

Lake Nipissing is Ontario’s fifth largest lake

Lake Nipissing is a shallow lake, but that doesn’t mean it’s small. The body of Lake Nipissing is approximately 875 KM squared. It is 65 kilometers long from the East to the West and 25 kilometers wide from the north to the south. This is big enough to make Lake Nipissing the fifth largest lake in Ontario. To take it one step further, Lake Nipissing is the third largest lake which is entirely in Ontario. While it may be shallow, with an average depth of just 15 feet, the vastness of the lake, combined with the depth, make it a rich bounty of ecological wonder.

Lake Nipissing is an Anglers Delight

Lake Nipissing is renowned for its fishing. It is the home to over 40 species of fish. The sandy basin, rocky islands and outcrops and weedy sections combine to provide a diverse habitat for fish species including walleye, perch, northern pike, and both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Whether you love to sit in a boat and fish in the clean, open water, or prefer to snowmobile out to an ice shack and auger out a fishing hole – Lake Nipissing lets you do both! Experience the four-season fishing of Lake Nipissing. In fact, in 2023 Lake Nipissing was named the number one ice fishing destination in Canada by fishingbooker.com.

Lake Nipissing has White Beaches to Lounge and Clean Waters to Swim

Are you looking to pop up your umbrella, lay down your towel and relax this summer? You’re in luck! North Bay is home to some of the best white-sand beaches in the region. The shoreline of the northeastern corner of Lake Nipissing is full of rocky outcrops and family-friendly beaches. The most popular beach on Lake Nipissing is Shabogesic Beach. Groomed in the mornings, this beach is like Sauble or the Muskoka beaches without the heavy crowds. It is one of the best beaches in Ontario for swimming. It is supervised by lifeguards and home to a modern playground. Looking for some recreational fun? Kinsmen Beach is a great spot to break out the beach games. Come throw a frisbee or a football and hang out at a local favorite. Lake Nipissing is a shallow lake, but Kinsmen Beach is one of the few spots where it gets deep quickly. Don’t forget to check out Sunset Park Beach or Champlain Park Beach either! Let these city beaches and their soft white sand lead you right into the clean water.

This Lake is made for Cruising

Cruises aren’t made for just oceans and seas! Lake Nipissing has them too. The Chief Commanda II (affectionately referred to as ‘The Chief’ by locals) is a 320-passenger twin-hull vessel which cruises the beautiful waters of Lake Nipissing. Equipped with two bars, a snack bar, washrooms, a barbeque and onboard entertainment, this three-decked vessel is a picture-perfect way to see Lake Nipissing. Hop on at dusk and take a spin around Callander Bay to witness a famous Lake Nipissing sunset. Head on out to the Manitou Islands and take in the scenes while you learn about the history and significance. Take a spin along the French River or check out the breathtaking fall colours during an autumn ride along the Lake Nipissing North Shore.

Shadflies!

They love North Bay so much, they come back every year! For a few weeks each summer, North Bay is home to a large group of Shadflies, also known as Mayflies. Shadflies are very important part of the ecosystem and are a sign that the water quality is really good. They emerge from the waters and head to shore once the lake reaches 20 degrees Celsius. While their time spent on land is very short, they play an important role for aquatic environment and food chains. Bear witness to their harmless annual invasion usually in and around the month of July.

A Lake with Deep History

It may be shallow, but the history of Lake Nipissing flows deep. Lake Nipissing was likely formed about 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age as the final glacier carved its way north over the Pre-Cambrian Shield. As the land rose out of Pangea, the massive body of water which was the Atlantic Ocean covering the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Valleys and Nipissing, Georgian Bay, and the Great Lakes, receded to the East and created the watershed between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake. This watershed was quickly put to important use.

Lake Nipissing as the Headwaters to the Commerce Highway

Lake Nipissing is now known as the shores of North Bay. It is recognized as a top-tier fishing spot in Ontario, as well as having the cleanest waters to swim in, and some of the best white sand beaches to relax under the sun on. Before Lake Nipissing gained renowned recognition as a premier lake, it was a vital part of trade routes. Along with the Ottawa River, Mattawa River and French River systems, Lake Nipissing was the main highway for fur traders, missionaries, and explorers of different natures to move commerce throughout North America. When the Canadian Pacific Railroad was created in the late 1800’s, Lake Nipissing remained integral to logging companies, who would boom and tow logs cut in the winter all over the province. There are now 38 dams controlling the inflow and outflow to Lake Nipissing, which ensure plenty of clean water is available in time for swimming, paddling, and boating season. Known today as La Vase, you can portage on Canoe Day each year or stick to the walking trail at the northern reaches of the historic La Vase Portage.

If you are planning a wedding then you must check out our wedding guide for North Bay!

North Bay Ontario is an absolute vision, especially during the summer months. Its waterfronts and sunsets are comparable to something out of a movie. Its gorgeous parks and beaches (with water that welcomes swimming) are great for afternoon picnics, walks on the beach or taking your bike or rollerblades down the Kate Pace way, while you enjoy the fresh air. In addition to its scenic atmosphere, it can also be more affordable than nearby Muskoka. The city’s local entrepreneurs offer a wide variety of services to cater to these special events. This is why so many couples choose to marry in North Bay. I have had the pleasure of working with many of North Bay’s businesses and vendors over the past ten years of owning my own business. My name is Kim Bean and I’ve been offering beauty services in North Bay (and surrounding areas) for more than a decade. If these options don’t suit your wedding day needs, I’ve included a few other options which you may be interested in.

Wedding Venues

There are many different venues available in North Bay and they suit a variety of aesthetics. Be sure to book in advance, like caterers, hair and makeup artists it is not uncommon for these facilities and services to be reserved a year or two a head of time.

From rustic and rural, historical and polished or ultra formal and modern here are some of the most beautiful venues to host both your ceremony and reception:

The North Bay Museum in the downtown and waterfront area or The Grande Event Centre on Main Street, Or, if you are going for more of a rustic country vibe then check out The Mel Gibson Ranch Co Inc, Black Saddle Barn Wedding and Event Venue, Aubrey Acres, Woodbridge Acres, and Barn and Bliss.

Accommodations

My mobile beauty services business has taken me to most of North Bay’s hotels and my favourite option is the Homewood Suites. This recently built location is within walking distance to the beach. It’s also close to many different bars and restaurants located on Algonquin Avenue and in the downtown core. If you’re someone who needs to prepare their own meals (or is travelling with a young family) many units also offer a kitchen and have spacious layouts.

In addition to Homewood Suites, North Bay has many other wonderful accommodations for your wedding guests. Visit the Tourism North Bay website where you can find a detailed list of hotels, motels, cottages, and B&B’s.

Tent and Party Shelter Rentals

Though I haven’t been married, I’ve attended over a hundred weddings in the past decade, and I know exactly who I’d call if or when he pops the question. In terms of the event itself, All Shelter Sales and Rentals is phenomenal in their customer service, wide selection of textiles, tables, tents, seating and the pieces available for rent are top quality, standing out in person and in photos. Their showroom is also incredibly helpful for those who need inspiration or prefer to see their options in person.

Wildflower Event Rentals is another great option, run by a young married couple who bring new and fresh rental options to North Bay. Whether it be customized wedding décor, or an event tent, Wildflower will ensure your personal touch is all over your wedding festivities.

Wedding Planners

When speaking to brides, a lot of them have told me that hiring a planner is vital when it comes to maintaining your sanity and remembering your special day after it happens. Tickled Pink Brides is a wedding planning service that assist with coordinating the needs for those getting married in North Bay or the surrounding area. This is an inclusive business who provides services such as full theme creation and floor plan designs while staying within your budget. For those who already know what they want, they also offer partial wedding planning packages designed to save you time, money, and stress.

Heart to Heart Celebrations is another fantastic option for helping you raise your wedding to the next level by totally customizing your ceremony with you, they help to turn all your wedding dreams into reality.

Flowers

When purchasing flowers, I always try to enlist Flourish By Hava, a small business run by a female entrepreneur who has a keen eye for complimentary colours and offers delivery. Her arrangements are customizable, incredibly fresh, eye-catching, lush and affordable.

Jackman’s Flower Shop has been a floral staple in North Bay, dating all the way back to 1908. There is nobody more experienced in fulfilling floral needs than Jackman’s. Offering customized wedding flowers and bouquets, Jackman’s and their experienced designers provide quality and detail, within your budget, to ensure your flowers are exactly as you imagined them to be.

Hairstyling

When I’m unable to provide hair services, I like to recommend someone I trust completely: Sherisse Mondoux of Hair Designers, a North Bay institution that has been in business for thirty-five years. Sherisse has been a hairstylist for two decades. I trust her with my colour, highlights, haircuts, treatments, and styles. I’m incredibly picky and I’m not the easiest client. My standards are high. Sherisse has created beautiful styles and colours for my grandmother, aunt, and mother – all women of different generations and who have very high standards. Sherisse never disappoints.

A few other options are Melissa Koprash Hair, and Bay Beauty Salon.

Hair Makeup and Nails by Kim Bean

Makeup

Hiring a professional to do your makeup provides you (and your wedding party) a huge sense of relief on a very busy day. If you’re not someone who uses makeup on a regular basis, I highly recommend that you do not take on this challenge.

A professional can stay on schedule and ensure that you look your best (both in person and in the photos that you will look back on, fondly). I have a lot of knowledge in this area with my own professional makeup service, What’s Bean Happening and have made up celebrities, models, musicians, and hundreds of brides. Each client gets the same star treatment no matter what. My aesthetic is both natural and glamorous.

Every makeup application is customized to reflect my clients’ individuality and personal preference. This is determined through a trial that takes place anywhere from 4 months to 4 days before the ceremony. The client is made to feel like their absolute best authentic selves on their wedding day.

Most brides book one to two years in advance with a few exceptions when dates change, and appointments open.

Photography

When it comes to capturing the moment Table and Pine is an absolute genius. No wedding is ever the same. Every photograph is incredibly personal, intimate, and full of love. Emily is a true artist who see’s special moments, which are sometimes fleeting, and makes sure that they are shared with the people who will cherish them most.

Other photographers to look at are Black Saddle Photography, Sabrina Johnson Photography, TanyaSeanExpressions or try The Cultivated Lens.

Catering

I am a serious foodie so when it comes to bakers and caterers, I’ve likely tried them. So here are my thoughts:

The first is AR Donuts, a small business that is fairly new to North Bay. They make a variety of homemade donuts ranging from chocolate to coconut. You can buy them by the dozen, or they can cater to your every reception need.

When shopping for a cake, I would go to Opera Bakery. I love the old-world vibe in their physical location, but they also have the most delicious, decadent baked goods and homemade foods. Their cake designs are both classic, themed and/or intricate, beautiful, and customizable. If you’ve ever thought that no one could compete with your grandma’s baking, Opera Bakery could be the one to change your mind!

In terms of delicious appetizers and mains, I have always been a devout Churchills customer. If you love premium cuts of meat, fresh seafood, great wine pairings, seasonal vegetables, and artistry when it comes to food, you need to look into this locally owned fine dining restaurant.

Another option for cakes and donuts is Good Glaze.

Cake and Donuts by Good Glaze

In conclusion, in North Bay, you’ll be immersed in a small town, northern environment, and whichever team you put together to make your big day perfect, you can trust that it will be a personalized and wonderful experience. In North Bay, there is no shortage of beautiful locations to read your vows or local experts who will help form your perfect wedding day support team. Say “I do” to your wedding in North Bay and toast a glass to a perfect magical ceremony.

When it comes to embarking on fishing expeditions, one name stands out in the North Bay area: Chelsea Lynn. A native of North Bay, Chelsea’s journey into the realm of fishing began unexpectedly, transforming her from a casual outdoor enthusiast to a dedicated and passionate angler. Her story is one of adventure, perseverance, and breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated fishing industry.

Chelsea’s love affair with fishing began in late 2015 when she crossed paths with her boyfriend Nik, an avid angler. Despite growing up in North Bay surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors, fishing hadn’t been a significant part of her life until then. A camping trip that included brook trout fishing changed everything. Catching multiple brook trout in the four to five-pound class ignited a spark within her, setting the stage for a journey that would lead her to become a prominent figure in the fishing community.

Chelsea’s love affair with fishing didn’t begin until she met her boyfriend Nik who is also an avid angler!

It wasn’t until June of 2016 that Chelsea ventured into musky fishing, which became a pivotal point in her angling journey. Within her first week of musky fishing, Chelsea hooked up, but it was a long road thereafter, not landing another musky until 2017 when she landed a 48 incher. Although musky fishing posed a challenge—requiring patience, persistence, and resilience—Chelsea was captivated by the thrill. She embraced the challenge and quickly found herself hooked on the exhilarating pursuit of muskies.

As her passion evolved, Chelsea expanded her horizons to embrace a variety of fish species. From early-season smallmouth bass and walleye to pike and lake trout, her experiences grew broader. Chelsea’s fishing territory extended from Lake Nipissing to other exciting locales, adding to her portfolio of angling accomplishments.

The fishing world has long been perceived as a male-dominated industry, but Chelsea is changing that narrative. She has become an influential presence within the industry through social media, becoming a beacon for other female anglers seeking representation and recognition. In her early days, Chelsea noticed the scarcity of female anglers on social media. However, over time, she witnessed a significant surge in the number of women who shared her passion.

Chelsea’s journey in fishing led her to a landmark moment when she, alongside fellow female anglers, became the first female panel for Musky Canada’s Muskie Odyssey event with Jessie Baker, Ashley Rae, Lauren Kozak, and Meg McGregor. This platform allowed her to discuss her experiences as a female angler and shed light on the challenges and triumphs she encountered while Musky fishing. Chelsea has played an instrumental role in building a robust community of female anglers who support and uplift one another.

Sitting down with Chelsea we got to discuss her seasonal fishing trips in North Bay on Lake Nipissing:

Top 5 North Bay Seasonal Fishing Trips:

 1. Burbot: January kicks off Chelsea’s fishing year with burbot fishing, including multiple ice fishing trips on Lake Nipissing. What started as a reluctant pursuit has transformed into an adrenaline-packed venture. The burbot’s impressive fight and the opportunity to catch the Ontario record make it an enticing winter ice fishing adventure. The area has limited opportunity in the early season to target larger sized fish like lake trout through the ice, and burbot fill that gap.

The burbot puts up an impressive fight and makes for an enticing winter adventure!

 1. Brook Trout: As winter transitions into February, Chelsea sets her sights on brook trout. Remote back lake exploration and the search to find native wild brook trout keeps her driven and motivated to find her next bite and potential trophy. The exhilaration of catching these wild beauties, coupled with the picturesque winter scenery, creates an unforgettable experience.

Remote back lake exploration allows Chelsea to find native wild brook trout!

 1. Northern Pike: Transitioning to spring, Chelsea enjoys pike fishing. The unpredictability of pike fishing, combined with the potential for catching trophy-sized fish, keeps her engaged. Chelsea notes that seasonal temperature fluctuations can present ideal opportunities to catch trophy-sized Northern Pike in the area with her largest to date being a 46.5” monster.

The unpredictability of pike fishing, combined with the potential for catching trophy-sized fish, keeps Chelsea engaged!

 1. Bass and Walleye: Once May Long weekend arrives, Chelsea changes her focus to bass and walleye. She enjoys the break from her pursuit of trophy-class fish and goes for numbers which has often has quality fish mixed in. This is the “break” in her season mentally as she can unwind a bit more and just enjoy catching. Chelsea notes that catch and release is a top priority for her, harvesting very few fish throughout the season.

Enjoying a break from trophy-class fish Chelsea goes for numbers with quality fish mixed in but keeps catch and release top of mind!

 1. Musky: From July to November, Chelsea’s focus turns to musky fishing. This apex predator is a true challenge, demanding patience, skill, and dedication. Musky season is characterized by intense adrenaline and anticipation, with every outing holding the promise of a new personal best, which she hit this summer with a 51” giant. Her season includes multiple week-long island camping trips and targeting them every chance she gets because you never know when the right fish will bite.
Top 5 North Bay Seasonal Fishing Trips

Catching a musky is a true challenge, demanding patience, skill and dedication!

Chelsea’s journey from a fishing novice to a respected angler has been one of discovery, challenges, and growth. Her experiences on the water have taught her invaluable life lessons. Patience, perseverance, and humility have become her guiding principles both in fishing and in life. Chelsea’s journey has shown that determination and a positive mindset can lead to rewards beyond one’s imagination.

As Chelsea continues to push her boundaries, she encourages others to do the same. Her story serves as an inspiration to anglers of all backgrounds, and particularly to female anglers who seek to break down barriers and excel in a field that has long been dominated by men. Chelsea’s love for fishing is not just about the catch; it’s about the connection with nature, the camaraderie of the fishing community, and the personal growth that comes from embracing challenges head-on.

So, whether you’re a seasoned angler or just dipping your toes into the fishing world, Chelsea Lynn’s journey stands as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the thrill of the chase here in North Bay.

]]>
Over the last decade, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring what I would call one of the best boating areas of Ontario, we’re truly blessed in this province to have so many freshwater marine opportunities surrounding us but its extra special when you find a place that truly does have it all. This place is North Bay, Ontario and what makes it extra special is the fact that this stunning sunset city is wedged between two stunning lakes, Lake Nipissing, and Trout Lake. So, step aboard and let me take you on a written descriptive tour of the North Bay Powerboating experience so that you have all the information you need to get out on the water!

This is the official guide to powerboating in North Bay!

Geography & History

First and foremost, let’s start with some very special Geography and History recap of this area. The city of North Bay is memorable in terms of watershed dynamics as Lake Nipissing flows west through the French and Pickerel Rivers into Georgian Bay/Lake Huron while Trout Lake flows east through the Mattawa River into the Ottawa River and because of this division of watersheds, this special specimen of land was also a historic exploration trade portage landmark known as the La Vase Portage which is comprised of three portages to transfer between lakes – this route was used thousands of years ago by First Nations and Voyageurs but today is commonly used by paddle – canoe – kayak enthusiasts.

Lake Nipissing

Lake Nipissing has a long and fascinating history which makes it an extraordinary boating experience. It is the fifth-largest lake in the province and covers an area of approximately 873 square kilometers (337 square miles). The lake has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Anishinaabe people, including the Nipissing First Nation, have lived in the region for generations and continue to have a strong presence in the area.

European explorers first arrived in the 17th century, with French fur traders and missionaries establishing trade routes and missions in the region. Lake Nipissing played a crucial role in the fur trade as a transportation route connecting the interior of North America to the St. Lawrence River.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, logging became an important industry in the Lake Nipissing region. Timber was harvested from the surrounding forests and transported via the lake to sawmills. There was even a mine on the lake at one point and you can read more about that here in local legend Backroads Bill Steers article Newman mine.

Today you will find that North Bay is a vibrant city that offers a full-service marina as well as various maintained boat launches to access Lake Nipissing. The municipally operated sheltered marina offers docking facilities for both short-term and long-term stays, providing secure mooring options for boats of various sizes. The marina offers a range of amenities and services including in-water fuel services, pump-out services, washrooms and showers, parking, and of course secure gated access to the docks. From the marina, you can easily walk to Downtown North Bay indulging in the many restaurants and shops, or simply just stroll on over to the landmark “The Boat” for a snack or refreshment.

North Bay Waterfront and Marina

North Bay Waterfront & Marina

Lake Nipissing is a fantastic lake for recreational boating including watersports, exploration, and of course world-class fishing. The waters are known to warm up quite nicely in the summer as much of the lake is relatively shallow (20-30ft on the North Bay east side), with the vast size of the lake you must respect that conditions can change quickly when the weather rolls in or the wind picks up mid-afternoon and thus diligence is required, I also highly recommend the use of navigational maps on your boats display or app on your phone as many shoals exist throughout the lake. With proper planning on this big water, you will enjoy countless hours of fun with your family and friends, I’ve detailed below five of my favorite boating outings from North Bay for you to enjoy!

Manitou Island

My Top 5 Lake Nipissing Boating Trips:
 1. Manitou Islands: Located 7km from the North Bay Marina, the Manitou Islands are a group of small islands known for their stunning natural scenery. Boaters can anchor their boats and enjoy swimming, picnicking, or playing on the stunning white sand beach.
 2. West Arm: The West Arm of Lake Nipissing is renowned for its tranquil beauty and abundant fishing opportunities. It is a popular spot for anglers looking to catch species such as walleye, northern pike, and bass. The scenic shoreline and calm waters make it an excellent place for boating and exploring.
 3. Callander Bay: Situated on the southern edge of Lake Nipissing, Callander Bay offers picturesque views and calm waters. It’s known for great fishing opportunities as well as a newly constructed lighthouse that’s worth a look.
 4. Sturgeon Falls: Located northwestern of North Bay, boating up the Sturgeon River is a special experience as you transition from the big open waters into a riverboat cruise, at the end you will find a marina with fuel and Twiggs for a snack.
 5. The French River: If you have the weather on your side and the power to make it across from North Bay its 30km (17 nautical miles) to the mouth of the French River, from here you can explore countless bays and passes, rugged Canadian shield topography, beautiful boat access only cottages and deep water.

For those without access to their own boat or who are unsure about being the captain consider singing up to be a skipper on the legendary Chief Commanda II which is docked at the North Bay Waterfront at the end of the pier in the Marina!

Trout Lake

Trout Lake is a significant and picturesque lake located in North Bay, Ontario, and is one of my favorite lakes to spend the day boating on. The Lake holds both recreational and ecological importance and serves as a prominent feature within the city of North Bay as it covers an area of approximately 17 square kilometers (6.6 square miles). The maximum depth of Trout Lake reaches a stunning 100 meters (330 feet). The depth contributes to the clarity and quality of the lake’s water, which is known for its excellent visibility. These deep and clear waters are home to landlocked Atlantic Salmon which naturally produce in Four Mile Creek, other species of fish include Lake Trout, Large & Smallmouth Bass, Musky, Pike, Walleye, and various pan or bait fish.

Trout Lake is dotted with beautiful homes and cottages within the bays and passes making for scenic boating experiences, popular on the lake is Camp Island which has a rich history of its own. Today the island is managed by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and is a popular spot for relaxing and camping, the southeast side of the island has a massive sandbar and beach along with a quiet cove that is known as an unofficial meeting place for recreational boaters on sunny days, this sandbar is a fantastic place for families and young children as the water, for the most part, is less than knee deep near shore.

Average Joes Restaurant located directly on Trout Lake also holds the annual Boatapalooza on-water concert where boaters gather to enjoy live music that is played from the dock, the restaurant also will deliver food directly to your boat, home, or cottage by personal watercraft.

Trout Lake is extra special as connects urban North Bay with wild Northern Ontario and by boating on this lake you have the ability to get it away from it all by heading east down the lake along a very historic route that is part of the Mattawa River, this route will take you into Turtle Lake which is a relatively small lake but very peaceful with only one heritage cottage on the lake. It’s of special note that boating from Trout Lake to Turtle Lake is a feast for the eyes, the rugged landscape of Canadian shield mixed with massive white pines is a natural work of art, if you’ve never experienced boating from Trout in Turtle it’s a must-do, however, do use caution as well as a navigational chart aid as there are rocks and shoals present so you must know where you are going. I’ve detailed below five of my favorite day-trip Trout Lake itineraries.

My Top 5 Trout Lake Boating Trips:
 1. Camp Island, head out onto the lake for a nice cruise then find your way to Camp Island for a relaxing afternoon on the sandbar, make sure to pack a picnic.
 2. Four Mile Bay, it’s always special to trim up and head through the shallow channel into Four Mile Bay, an opportunity to gaze up to the North at the massive escarpment.
 3. Did you know the hit TV show “The Lake” was filmed on Trout Lake, head to the south side of the lake approximately halfway down and see if you can spot a few landmarks?
 4. To Turtle Lake, as noted this is a must-do trip that is old as time but never gets old, in fact, I think I visit every time I hit the waters of Trout Lake – take note of the plaque in the pass between.
 5. Average Joes, The Portage, or The Green Store – if you’re hungry for great eats or just want to treat the family to a delicious ice cream cone then dock the boat and spend some time on dry land, the cuisine is fabulous.

Lake Nipissing is one of the best places to fish in Ontario. It’s a Northern gem that is often overlooked during the open water season in the spring, summer and fall. Offering ample opportunities for a wide variety of species of fish, including Walleye, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Musky, Northern Pike, and an assortment of panfish and sheepshead (aka freshwater drum), the lake is vast and can be broken out into seven different sections: West Arm, West Bay, Lavigne, Cache Bay, French River, Callander Bay, and South Shore, and the main lake basin, which includes water directly accessible from North Bay. The city of North Bay, built around the northeast quadrant of the lake, provides excellent trophy fish opportunities and accommodations, including fishing lodges for your next fishing adventure.

Spring, Summer and Fall Fishing

The lake opens on the third Saturday in May, with the shallow water bite kicking off immediately. This ensures fun for the whole family no matter the age as you can troll, cast a bobber, drag a jig or work a presentation to entice a bite. This also allows for boats big or small to access fishable water, along with many shoreline locations. May through July is usually the best time to target shallower Walleye, Pike, and Bass, which have an early open season compared to our neighbors in the south.

Summer Fishing on Lake Nipissing

Spend a summer day on Lake Nipissing fishing with the family

The regulation changes and lake monitoring program have shown great success, with anglers reporting significant numbers of catches, including more keeper-sized Walleye than in the past ten years. We have an extremely healthy population of fish in the 16-21” range, which offer an amazing fight, and catches in the 24” plus range are showing up more and more frequently. The chance for a 28” plus trophy Walleye is better than ever!

Best Fishing Spots for Walleye, Northern Pike and Bass

Callander Bay and the northeast shoreline are great places to start your search, focusing on sand flats and rock to sand transitions for some of the best Walleye fishing in Ontario. Trophy Northern Pike can be found in the shallow weed beds and usually the first break off if they aren’t actively feeding. Largemouth Bass will be found throughout these areas as well and offer a great fight, with Smallmouth Bass always showing off their acrobatics. Many presentations can be offered to get bites, but the Lake Nipissing staples are a jig and live bait like minnow/worm/leech, worm harness, flicker minnow/shad, jerk/twitch baits, and spinner baits.

Head over to Lefebvres Source for Adventure, North Bay Outfitters, Northern Tackle Supply Co, Bay Tackle Supply, Billy Bobs, or Trapper Joes for all your local bait and tackle needs!

Beaches, Islands and Rivers

Lake Nipissing is a large inland shallow lake with many islands, channels, and areas to explore while out fishing. Sometimes the boating can be as nice as the fishing. Taking a ride out to the Manitou Islands and stopping at the beach for a swim, traveling across the lake to the French river and exploring its vast beauty along with keeping your eyes out for a wide variety of predatory birds from bald eagles, osprey, and hawks will just complement the amazing fishing.

Family-Friendly Fishing Adventure

Fun for the whole family awaits your arrival at the boat ramps, including the North Bay Marina and La Vase River, which have excellent park facilities for the kids, a dog park along with The Boat restaurant. What beats coming off the water with great fish stories than sitting down lakeside for a bite to eat and a cold drink, or letting the family get their pent-up energy out while getting the boat ready to head back to your accommodation.
