Capitol Centre

Located in downtown North Bay, the Capitol Centre is the city’s premier destination for live theatre, art exhibitions, film, and community events. As a designated heritage site, this former 1929 “palace of splendour” continues to be the cultural epicentre of North Bay.

Originally opened on June 1, 1929 as the Capitol Theatre by Famous Players, the venue was built with 1,455 seats, elaborate Spanish‑style décor, and state-of-the-art design for its day. Over the decades, it survived economic hardship, wartime years, and changing entertainment trends — hosting films, live performances, and even local businesses.

In the 1970s, a grassroots group named the North Bay Theatre and Arts Community Centre (TACC) rallied to save the building. By 1986, they purchased the theatre, restored it, and reopened it in 1987 as a revitalized arts centre. Since then—notwithstanding modern upgrades—the Capitol Centre has preserved its historic charm while adapting for current productions.

What You’ll Find at the Capitol Centre

Betty Speers Theatre: With roughly 930 fixed seats, the theatre hosts a wide range of performances—including concerts by the North Bay Symphony Orchestra, theatrical productions, dance, film screenings, comedy, and more.
W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery: This public gallery features rotating art exhibits, photography, sculpture, and traditional and contemporary works by local and touring artists.
Event Spaces: The second-floor “Galaxy Room” is available for receptions, community gatherings, and private functions.
