Tourism North Bay is proud to announce that North Bay will host the STEM Racing 2026 Canadian National Championships, welcoming some of the country’s brightest young innovators to the city from April 10–12, 2026. The event will take place at the Canadore College Sportsplex and marks a major milestone for STEM education in Canada and a historic first for the country.

Formerly known globally as F1 in Schools, STEM Racing is widely recognized as the world’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition. Operating in more than 80 countries worldwide, the program challenges high school students to form teams that design, manufacture, and race miniature compressed-air-powered cars while also developing professional marketing, branding, and business strategies.

The 2026 Championships mark the first time this international competition has been hosted in Canada, made possible through the support of Canadore College, in alliance with InspireTech Canada, a Parry Sound–based not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing youth engagement in STEM.

“North Bay is set to welcome the brightest young minds from across the country,” said Kyle Boyko, President and Board Chair of Inspire Tech Canada Corp. “We are thrilled to bring high school students from across Canada to the Canadore College Sportsplex for the inaugural STEM Racing Canada National Championships. This historic event celebrates innovation, teamwork, and the future of Canadian STEM education.”

Canadore College sees the event as a powerful extension of its commitment to hands-on learning, skilled trades, and applied innovation.

“Welcoming the STEM Racing Canada National Championships to Canadore College is a major opportunity to see what’s possible when STEM learning meets hands-on design and skilled trades,” said Josh Willard, Manager, Marketing, Recruitment and Storytelling at Canadore College. “Students aren’t just racing a car — they’re applying engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork in a real-world competition environment. We’re proud to welcome teams from across Canada alongside InspireTech Canada, The City of North Bay, and Tourism North Bay to help inspire the next generation of builders, innovators, and future leaders.”

Tourism North Bay notes that the event is a powerful opportunity to showcase the city while also delivering meaningful economic and community impact.

“Hosting a national championship of this calibre reinforces North Bay’s reputation as a destination that supports innovation, education, and major events,” said Tanya Bédard, Executive Director of Tourism North Bay. “We’re excited to welcome students, educators, families, and supporters from across Canada and introduce them to everything our city has to offer.”

The public is invited to attend and experience the excitement firsthand as teams compete for the national title, demonstrating cutting-edge engineering, creativity, and collaboration.

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES WITH THE RELEASE OF THE 2025 MAGAZINE

In celebration of National Tourism Week (April 7-11, 2025), Tourism North Bay is excited to share the release of the 2025 tourism magazine.

Capitalizing on the success of the initial launch in early 2024, the updated magazine includes new elements, new stories and historic images that also recognize and celebrate the city’s Centennial.

Tanya Bédard, Executive Director of Tourism North Bay stated, “as North Bay prepares to celebrate its official Centennial next week, it is important to reflect on the rich history and cultural heritage that have shaped the destination over the past century and it is our role at Tourism North Bay to capture the excitement and share with potential visitors.”

Designed to captivate and inspire, the magazine offers readers a spectacular, visual journey through the heart of Northern Ontario’s Gateway city. Tourism North Bay worked with local marketing agency, Clark Communications again this year to add four extra pages in addition to a new front cover that represents the growing culinary experiences available in the city.

The magazine still features insider tips from local fishing anglers and powersport enthusiasts, the rich tapestry of Indigenous history and culture, must-visit attractions and events, the Airforce Defence history as well as sharing valuable insights for travelers seeking authentic experiences and memorable adventures.

“We thank all of our local partners, writers and photographers who contributed to the publication and helped to make it a spectacular showcase of our city,” continued Ms. Bédard.

Over the next few weeks, the updated publication will be distributed to tourist information sites across the province and locally to the accommodation providers, attractions and partners.  A full digital copy is also now available at https://www.tourismnorthbay.com/resources/.

In celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Centennial, the 22 Wing North Bay RCAF2024 Stakeholder Committee and the City of North Bay planted tulip bulbs in locations around North Bay that have special significance in the history of the RCAF. In order to recognize these efforts and celebrate this milestone, Tourism North Bay has created a Flight of Fancy Tulip Tour highlighting these sites across the city.

Four different tulip varieties were planted at the North Bay CF-100 Canuck Memorial at Lee Park, the Fighter Group Monument along the North Bay Waterfront, Memorial Park and at 22 Wing North Bay.  Although tulips were planted at 22 Wing, this site is not included in the public visitor tour.

Tanya Bédard, Executive Director of Tourism North Bay, expressed her enthusiasm for the new tour, stating, “We are proud to participate in the RCAF Centennial Committee and to work with this dedicated group in creating a new tour that highlights the significant contributions of the military to our city. Although the tulips have yet to bloom completely at all sites, we feel it is important to share the news about this new tour so that visitors can plan their trip in the next few weeks.  The tour not only shares background on each of the selected sites, but also provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the city’s picturesque landscapes and monuments adorned with colourful tulips.”

At each location, visitors will find a sign next to the tulip bed that details the significance and history of the site along with a QR code that will direct them to Tourism North Bay’s webpage which loads a map and further information regarding each site.

Colonel Richard Jolette, 22 Wing and Canadian Air Defence Sector Commander said, “The Flight of Fancy Tulips were planted throughout the city of North Bay and at 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay last fall so that in the spring of 2024 they would bloom in celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Centennial.  Named Wings, Ad Astra, Rescue and Flyers these tulips reflect people who served, who continue to serve in the RCAF, and inspire future generations.”

The RCAF has historic ties to tulips, when in World War II, Canada assisted in the liberation of the Netherlands. As a thank you, and a yearly tradition, to this day the Netherlands sends 20,000 tulip bulbs to Canada to which North Bay received 8,500.

Chief Warrant Officer Didier Pignatel, 22 Wing Chief Warrant Officer and Champion for the North Bay RCAF 2024 Stakeholder Committee explains, ‘“The Flight of Fancy Tulips are not only symbols of the rich history of the Royal Canadian Air Force, but they also represent how a community comes together to celebrate the people of the RCAF.  Our Honorary Colonels, the city of North Bay, community members, members of 22 Wing North Bay gave generously and worked hard to plant close to 8,500 bulbs in Lee Park, the North Bay Waterfront, Memorial Park and at 22 Wing North Bay.  We are honoured with this incredible support which is yet another example of how North Bay appreciates its military.”

Mayor Peter Chirco continued, “The City of North Bay is proud to support the Flight of Fancy Tulip Tour, and we invite everyone to enjoy the beauty of these tulips as we celebrate 100 years of service by the Royal Canadian Air Force.”

The creation of the Flight of Fancy Tulip Tour underscores North Bay’s commitment to promoting tourism and preserving its rich cultural heritage. By honoring the RCAF’s Centennial, Tourism North Bay aims to pay tribute to the men and women who have served in Canada’s Air Force and we invite locals and tourists alike to join us in commemorating this momentous occasion.  It is expected for the tulips to be in full bloom during the last 2 weeks of May.
