Located just 3.5 hours north of Toronto and 4 hours west of Ottawa, North Bay has a wonderful mix of well-known franchises and local favourites to choose from. All of these restaurants are family and kid-friendly.

As we welcome the cooler weather and warmer sweaters, we also bare witness to the sun dancing on the water and the sun shining through the trees onto leaves that are turning a vibrant shade of red, orange and gold and it gives you the feeling of being transported into another world. We’re naturally curious about the science behind why leaves change, but what we love most is getting outdoors to immerse ourselves in the brilliant colours, smells and tastes of the harvest season. So, let’s get into seven ways to FALL in love with North Bay below and but feel free to check out other fall fun ideas around North bay too.

One of the highlights of the fall season in North Bay are the farm tours and harvest festivals hosted by nearby farmers. The North Bay area is rich with small-scale family farms and medium-scale farmers who ply their wares at the local North Bay Farmer’s Market all year-round.  Leisure Farms is located 30 minutes west of North Bay and for the whole month of October they host their annual Pumpkin Patch event where you can  brave the haunted barn, get lost in the corn maze, load up the pumpkin canon, and take the obligatory picture beside the mountain of pumpkins.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN NORTH BAY!

As night falls in the north and communities grow quiet, often in out of the cold temperatures brought forth by fall and winter, a funny thing happens: the sky awakens. In Northern Ontario, we are graced every night with a sky full of stars and nighttime activity. Surrounded by dark sky preserves and big sky wilderness, when many are falling asleep, the show is often just only starting.

While the starry night can often put on displays of brilliance, they are occasionally joined by a special guest. If you’re lucky enough to bear witness, it will leave you mesmerized and craving more.

WHAT CAUSES THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The Aurora Borealis, also know as the Northern Lights, is a jaw-dropping, eye-widening phenomenon of colourful lights in shades of green, red, purple and blue dancing across the sky. Caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with gasses in the earth’s atmosphere, northern lights occur in the North Pole, when solar winds carry the particles into earth’s magnetic field. The dancing colours depend on the altitude of the collision, with the highest altitude causing red, and the lowest causing blue, with green and purple in between. Different gasses cause different colours when they are energised.

What causes the Northern Lights?

What causes the Northern Lights?

The northern lights are a truly remarkable experience to witness, and surely won’t leave you regretting all that sleep you’ll miss out on! So, you may be asking, when and where can I see this display?

WHEN TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ONTARIO

The northern lights are best seen around the equinoxes, the two times per year when the sun crosses the equator. The equinoxes occur in March/April and September/October, and lead to increased magnetic storms. Since the northern lights occur in the North Pole, the best places to see them, include northern Canada, meaning right here, in North Bay. It is a beautiful 3.5hours journey north of Toronto and 4hrs west of Ottawa and sits of the shore lines of Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake and below the Laurentian Escarpment.

Where is North Bay Map

Unsure when they’ll appear? Not to worry! Astronomers and researchers provide an Aurora Forecast that can help you plan your search. So, on a clear night between 10PM and 2AM, grab your blankets and your cameras, and head out to one of these spots to watch the show.

The northern lights are best seen in optimal conditions, meaning clear skies and dark surroundings. This includes when the moon isn’t yet out or has set! In the wintertime, there is significantly more darkness, meaning your chances of seeing them rise! For these reasons, dark and clear fall and winter nights are optimal times to see the northern lights.

WHERE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ONTARIO?

Northeastern Ontario is a perfect spot to see the northern lights, and North Bay is a terrific option. Surrounded by wilderness, North Bay offers a wide variety of dark sky spots to set up your camera and your chair.

Nordic Ski Club

The North Bay Nordic Ski Club, located on Northshore Road, is a vast and beautiful network of trails and woodlands. Less than a 20-minute drive from North Bay proper, you can get away from the city lights and find open air to set your eyes to the north. In the fall, there is nothing quite like being immersed in the autumn foliage while gazing at the dancing lights above. In the winter, grab your snowshoes or your skis and choose a trail to head out and find your exclusive northern lights viewing spot.

Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area

The Laurentien Escarpment Conservation Area surrounds the City of North Bay and boasts some of the most beautiful views around. There are several well-maintained trails to head out on. Up above the city, light pollution is at a minimum. So, take advantage of the proximity of this prime viewing spot and bear witness to all the colours of the aurora borealis.

La Vase Portage Conservation Area

La Vase Portages, along with its historical significance, is a terrific spot to view the lights. With big, open sky looking almost 360 degrees, you are sure to witness a remarkable display. Head out to Elks Lodge #25 Family Park Conservation Area to escape the light and find the open sky!

North Bay Waterfront

The North Bay Waterfront has become the flagship attraction of North Bay and rightly so! In a time when there is too much hustle and bustle in our lives, the Waterfront offers a break to thousands of people who frequent the area on a regular basis and is only a short stroll to Downtown North Bay as well. It is also a perfect location to view the Northern Lights close to downtown.

Other options just outside of North Bay are:

Callander

Approximately ten minutes south of North Bay lies the town of Callander, resting on Callander Bay, a part of Lake Nipissing. With views to the northwest, and minimal light pollution, Callander Bay is an exquisite place to head out hunting for the northern lights. Sit by the lake and set up your camera, because the show is sure to be amazing.

Algonquin Park

Close to North Bay is the Northwest corner of Algonquin Park. Is viewing the northern lights on your bucket list? Check the forecast and come on to North Bay! Set up camp in the Gateway to the North and take a little excursion to Algonquin Park.

If you’re an aurora fan, and looking for other enthusiasts, the North Bay Astronomy Club offer regular organised northern lights related events and parties. There are plenty of resources available to track the northern lights activity. So check to see the northern lights forecast, book your accommodation and then head out to one of these spots for a viewing party you won’t soon forget.

It’s back! The most vibrant of the seasons: Fall. As the temperatures start to drop and the days begin to get shorter, the forest transforms into a canopy of colour. In North Bay and the Nipissing Region area, the Boreal Forest that surrounds us turns into a picturesque landscape of gold, yellow, orange, and red. All the way across the Laurentian Escarpment and beyond, the forest transforms before our eyes in one last show of brilliance before winter is beckoned forth.

A seasonal display of brilliance often taken for granted, the changing of the leaves draws out the crowds to trek the local trails, take in the viewpoints, and indulge in the picture-perfect sights. In North Bay, there are plenty of pristine places to choose from so you can soak up the colours. Laurentian Escarpment and its 70-meter-long canvas wrap around the city offering views for even the urban dwellers. Whether it is a hike to Duchesnay Falls, or a trek along the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area trails, or take a day trip to Restoule, Mikisew, Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, or the northwestern access point of Algonquin Provincial Park, either way the views will not fail to delight.

Duchesnay Falls

While the fall colours are a seasonal, and sometimes an annual, fan favourite, you may wonder about the reason behind it all? Have you ever stepped out into a crisp autumn morning, looked about at the fiery maple trees or golden birches and wondered “why”? Aside from bringing colour to the sometimes-gloomy days, there is a simply scientific reason behind the most picturesque season.

Leaves contain something called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts serve as disk-like structures within cells and their role is to produce food for the tree. You may know this sequence as photosynthesis. Well, chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, and chlorophyll is what provides the leaves with their pigment, giving them their green colour. This makes them ideal for absorbing sunlight, a critical ingredient in the photosynthesis process. More sunlight equals more chlorophyll, which equals greener trees! Now, you may see where this is going. As July turns to August and August to September, the days grow shorter and the sun gets further from earth, thus reducing the available sunlight. As the fall begins to grasp the area, chlorophyll can no longer pack the same punch it used to. It begins to lie dormant, which means the leaves can longer produce food for the tree. As the chlorophyll breaks down, more chemicals appear, such as carotene and xanthophylls, which give the leaves orange and yellow pigments, and anthocyanins, which bring forth the reds. The reds are a result of sugars in the leaf, which get stored in the twigs to return with the spring season. While it seems like the chlorophyll is defeated, these pigments occur from the chemicals emerging in leaf cells, protecting the chlorophyll from suffering any damage.

Situated on the Canadian Shield, North Bay also lies within the boreal forest. The largest forest region in Ontario and Canada, the boreal forest is a mix of coniferous (softwood) and deciduous (hardwood). Species include black and white spruce, jack pine, balsam fir, tamarack, eastern white cedar, poplar, and white birch. This terrific mix of species gives North Bay a landscape of primarily emerald, yellow, and gold with a splash of reds and oranges.

As we set out this fall on to the trails and wherever else our adventures may take us, hopefully this extra added knowledge makes the fall colour display even more brilliant. Stand in awe of the colours and be mesmerized by the natural processes which occur beyond our sight. It’s also important to remember that while you set out to enjoy this seasonal wonder, others hope to do the same! So, kindly respect our nature space by staying on the designated trails, leaving no trace of your presence, allowing others the same experience you hope for, and working to ensure our beautiful outdoor space remains as pristine as possible.

Happy fall y’all!!

If you are planning a wedding then you must check out our wedding guide for North Bay!

North Bay Ontario is an absolute vision, especially during the summer months. Its waterfronts and sunsets are comparable to something out of a movie. Its gorgeous parks and beaches (with water that welcomes swimming) are great for afternoon picnics, walks on the beach or taking your bike or rollerblades down the Kate Pace way, while you enjoy the fresh air. In addition to its scenic atmosphere, it can also be more affordable than nearby Muskoka. The city’s local entrepreneurs offer a wide variety of services to cater to these special events. This is why so many couples choose to marry in North Bay. I have had the pleasure of working with many of North Bay’s businesses and vendors over the past ten years of owning my own business. My name is Kim Bean and I’ve been offering beauty services in North Bay (and surrounding areas) for more than a decade. If these options don’t suit your wedding day needs, I’ve included a few other options which you may be interested in.

Wedding Venues

There are many different venues available in North Bay and they suit a variety of aesthetics. Be sure to book in advance, like caterers, hair and makeup artists it is not uncommon for these facilities and services to be reserved a year or two a head of time.

From rustic and rural, historical and polished or ultra formal and modern here are some of the most beautiful venues to host both your ceremony and reception:

The North Bay Museum in the downtown and waterfront area or The Grande Event Centre on Main Street, Or, if you are going for more of a rustic country vibe then check out The Mel Gibson Ranch Co Inc, Black Saddle Barn Wedding and Event Venue, Aubrey Acres, Woodbridge Acres, and Barn and Bliss.

Accommodations

My mobile beauty services business has taken me to most of North Bay’s hotels and my favourite option is the Homewood Suites. This recently built location is within walking distance to the beach. It’s also close to many different bars and restaurants located on Algonquin Avenue and in the downtown core. If you’re someone who needs to prepare their own meals (or is travelling with a young family) many units also offer a kitchen and have spacious layouts.

In addition to Homewood Suites, North Bay has many other wonderful accommodations for your wedding guests. Visit the Tourism North Bay website  where you can find a detailed list of hotels, motels, cottages, and B&B’s.

Tent and Party Shelter Rentals

Though I haven’t been married, I’ve attended over a hundred weddings in the past decade, and I know exactly who I’d call if or when he pops the question. In terms of the event itself, All Shelter Sales and Rentals is phenomenal in their customer service, wide selection of textiles, tables, tents, seating and the  pieces available for rent are top quality, standing out in person and in photos. Their showroom is also incredibly helpful for those who need inspiration or prefer to see their options in person.

Wildflower Event Rentals is another great option, run by a young married couple who bring new and fresh rental options to North Bay. Whether it be customized wedding décor, or an event tent, Wildflower will ensure your personal touch is all over your wedding festivities.

 Wedding Planners

When speaking to brides, a lot of them have told me that hiring a planner is vital when it comes to maintaining your sanity and remembering your special day after it happens. Tickled Pink Brides is a wedding planning service that assist with coordinating the needs for those getting married in North Bay or the surrounding area.  This is an inclusive business who provides services such as full theme creation and floor plan designs while staying within your budget. For those who already know what they want, they also offer partial wedding planning packages designed to save you time, money, and stress.

Heart to Heart Celebrations is another fantastic option for helping you raise your wedding to the next level by totally customizing your ceremony with you, they help to turn all your wedding dreams into reality.

Flowers

When purchasing flowers, I always try to enlist Flourish By Hava, a small business run by a female entrepreneur who has a keen eye for complimentary colours and offers delivery. Her arrangements are customizable, incredibly fresh, eye-catching, lush and affordable.

Jackman’s Flower Shop has been a floral staple in North Bay, dating all the way back to 1908. There is nobody more experienced in fulfilling floral needs than Jackman’s. Offering customized wedding flowers and bouquets, Jackman’s and their experienced designers provide quality and detail, within your budget, to ensure your flowers are exactly as you imagined them to be.

Hairstyling

When I’m unable to provide hair services, I like to recommend someone I trust completely: Sherisse Mondoux of Hair Designers, a North Bay institution that has been in business for thirty-five years. Sherisse has been a hairstylist for two decades. I trust her with my colour, highlights, haircuts, treatments, and styles. I’m incredibly picky and I’m not the easiest client. My standards are high. Sherisse has created beautiful styles and colours for my grandmother, aunt, and mother – all women of different generations and who have very high standards. Sherisse never disappoints.

A few other options are Melissa Koprash Hair, and Bay Beauty Salon.

Hair Makeup and Nails by Kim Bean

Makeup

Hiring a professional to do your makeup provides you (and your wedding party) a huge sense of relief on a very busy day. If you’re not someone who uses makeup on a regular basis, I highly recommend that you do not take on this challenge.

A professional can stay on schedule and ensure that you look your best (both in person and in the photos that you will look back on, fondly). I have a lot of knowledge in this area with my own professional makeup service, What’s Bean Happening and have made up celebrities, models, musicians, and hundreds of brides. Each client gets the same star treatment no matter what. My aesthetic is both natural and glamorous.

Catering

I am a serious foodie so when it comes to bakers and caterers, I’ve likely tried them. So here are my thoughts:

The first is AR Donuts, a small business that is fairly new to North Bay. They make a variety of homemade donuts ranging from chocolate to coconut. You can buy them by the dozen, or they can cater to your every reception need.

When shopping for a cake, I would go to Opera Bakery. I love the old-world vibe in their physical location, but they also have the most delicious, decadent baked goods and homemade foods. Their cake designs are both classic, themed and/or intricate, beautiful, and customizable. If you’ve ever thought that no one could compete with your grandma’s baking, Opera Bakery could be the one to change your mind!

In terms of delicious appetizers and mains, I have always been a devout Churchills customer. If you love premium cuts of meat, fresh seafood, great wine pairings, seasonal vegetables, and artistry when it comes to food, you need to look into this locally owned fine dining restaurant.

Another option for cakes and donuts is Good Glaze.

In conclusion, in North Bay, you’ll be immersed in a small town, northern environment, and whichever team you put together to make your big day perfect, you can trust that it will be a personalized and wonderful experience. In North Bay, there is no shortage of beautiful locations to read your vows or local experts who will help form your perfect wedding day support team. Say “I do” to your wedding in North Bay and toast a glass to a perfect magical ceremony.

When it comes to embarking on fishing expeditions, one name stands out in the North Bay area: Chelsea Lynn. A native of North Bay, Chelsea’s journey into the realm of fishing began unexpectedly, transforming her from a casual outdoor enthusiast to a dedicated and passionate angler. Her story is one of adventure, perseverance, and breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated fishing industry.

Chelsea’s love affair with fishing began in late 2015 when she crossed paths with her boyfriend Nik, an avid angler. Despite growing up in North Bay surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors, fishing hadn’t been a significant part of her life until then. A camping trip that included brook trout fishing changed everything. Catching multiple brook trout in the four to five-pound class ignited a spark within her, setting the stage for a journey that would lead her to become a prominent figure in the fishing community.

Chelsea’s love affair with fishing didn’t begin until she met her boyfriend Nik who is also an avid angler!

It wasn’t until June of 2016 that Chelsea ventured into musky fishing, which became a pivotal point in her angling journey. Within her first week of musky fishing, Chelsea hooked up, but it was a long road thereafter, not landing another musky until 2017 when she landed a 48 incher. Although musky fishing posed a challenge—requiring patience, persistence, and resilience—Chelsea was captivated by the thrill. She embraced the challenge and quickly found herself hooked on the exhilarating pursuit of muskies.

As her passion evolved, Chelsea expanded her horizons to embrace a variety of fish species. From early-season smallmouth bass and walleye to pike and lake trout, her experiences grew broader. Chelsea’s fishing territory extended from Lake Nipissing to other exciting locales, adding to her portfolio of angling accomplishments.

The fishing world has long been perceived as a male-dominated industry, but Chelsea is changing that narrative. She has become an influential presence within the industry through social media, becoming a beacon for other female anglers seeking representation and recognition. In her early days, Chelsea noticed the scarcity of female anglers on social media. However, over time, she witnessed a significant surge in the number of women who shared her passion.

Chelsea’s journey in fishing led her to a landmark moment when she, alongside fellow female anglers, became the first female panel for Musky Canada’s Muskie Odyssey event with Jessie Baker, Ashley Rae, Lauren Kozak, and Meg McGregor. This platform allowed her to discuss her experiences as a female angler and shed light on the challenges and triumphs she encountered while Musky fishing. Chelsea has played an instrumental role in building a robust community of female anglers who support and uplift one another.

Sitting down with Chelsea we got to discuss her seasonal fishing trips in North Bay on Lake Nipissing:

Top 5 North Bay Seasonal Fishing Trips:

  1. Burbot: January kicks off Chelsea’s fishing year with burbot fishing, including multiple ice fishing trips on Lake Nipissing. What started as a reluctant pursuit has transformed into an adrenaline-packed venture. The burbot’s impressive fight and the opportunity to catch the Ontario record make it an enticing winter ice fishing adventure. The area has limited opportunity in the early season to target larger sized fish like lake trout through the ice, and burbot fill that gap.

The burbot puts up an impressive fight and makes for an enticing winter adventure!

  1. Brook Trout: As winter transitions into February, Chelsea sets her sights on brook trout. Remote back lake exploration and the search to find native wild brook trout keeps her driven and motivated to find her next bite and potential trophy. The exhilaration of catching these wild beauties, coupled with the picturesque winter scenery, creates an unforgettable experience.

  1. Northern Pike: Transitioning to spring, Chelsea enjoys pike fishing. The unpredictability of pike fishing, combined with the potential for catching trophy-sized fish, keeps her engaged. Chelsea notes that seasonal temperature fluctuations can present ideal opportunities to catch trophy-sized Northern Pike in the area with her largest to date being a 46.5” monster.

The unpredictability of pike fishing, combined with the potential for catching trophy-sized fish, keeps Chelsea engaged!

  1. Bass and Walleye: Once May Long weekend arrives, Chelsea changes her focus to bass and walleye. She enjoys the break from her pursuit of trophy-class fish and goes for numbers which has often has quality fish mixed in. This is the “break” in her season mentally as she can unwind a bit more and just enjoy catching. Chelsea notes that catch and release is a top priority for her, harvesting very few fish throughout the season.

Enjoying a break from trophy-class fish Chelsea goes for numbers with quality fish mixed in but keeps catch and release top of mind!

  1. Musky: From July to November, Chelsea’s focus turns to musky fishing. This apex predator is a true challenge, demanding patience, skill, and dedication. Musky season is characterized by intense adrenaline and anticipation, with every outing holding the promise of a new personal best, which she hit this summer with a 51” giant. Her season includes multiple week-long island camping trips and targeting them every chance she gets because you never know when the right fish will bite.

Catching a musky is a true challenge, demanding patience, skill and dedication!

Chelsea’s journey from a fishing novice to a respected angler has been one of discovery, challenges, and growth. Her experiences on the water have taught her invaluable life lessons. Patience, perseverance, and humility have become her guiding principles both in fishing and in life. Chelsea’s journey has shown that determination and a positive mindset can lead to rewards beyond one’s imagination.

As Chelsea continues to push her boundaries, she encourages others to do the same. Her story serves as an inspiration to anglers of all backgrounds, and particularly to female anglers who seek to break down barriers and excel in a field that has long been dominated by men. Chelsea’s love for fishing is not just about the catch; it’s about the connection with nature, the camaraderie of the fishing community, and the personal growth that comes from embracing challenges head-on.

So, whether you’re a seasoned angler or just dipping your toes into the fishing world, Chelsea Lynn’s journey stands as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the thrill of the chase here in North Bay.

A welcome cool crisp air has settled over North Bay, Ontario and with it the change to another spectacular season marked by a kaleidoscope of colour, cozy knits and delicious harvest fare to warm the belly.

North Bay sits in the transition between the Northern boreal forest and southern Ontario’s deciduous forest. This means a diversity of tree types and a full palette of colour in autumn presented on North Bay’s living masterpiece: the 70-meter escarpment that wraps around the city centre. Before you go, check Ontario Parks’ fall colour report for a barometer of the colour change and percentage leaf drop in the area around North Bay. Restoule, Mikisew and Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park are the fabulous local parks to check.

Grab a fresh roasted, fair-trade, organic latte from Twiggs Coffee Roasters and hit the trails at the Education Centre. The parking lot on Highway 17 gets you close to the stunning Duchesnay Falls where you can soak up some positive energy while you sip on that delicious latte.

The yellow hues and rustling leaves of the poplar trees at the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area trails have a mystical feel during a light rain when the mist rises. Start your hike from Laurentian Ski Hill’s parking lot at the top of the hill for stunning views of the city, Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake along the McNutt Family Trail. On your way back down the escarpment stop at Ivan’s Restaurant for a hearty harvest soup of the day. Ivan’s is a North Bay tradition since 1945 and make a mean milkshake too!

The Otter Lake Recreation Area offers a quiet solitary hike through the forest a 15 minute drive from downtown. Pack your backpack with a fresh loaf of sourdough bread from The Culture Club or a fresh treat from Cobs Bread Bakery to savour on the shore of Otter Lake where the colours reflect beautifully in the calm waters. Cell reception is intermittent on the trail – just the way we like it.

Bring your rubber boots to the Cranberry Trail and venture out into the cranberry bog to see if you can find some wild cranberries. FYI – They begin to ripen after a few heavy frosts. The Municipality of Callander celebrates Cranberry Day in early October each year with family-friendly activities and tons of cranberry treats. The flaming red hues of the sumac that line parts of the trail are especially stunning in the fall.

The south end of the Kate Pace Way is an easy walk on level pavement making it great for strollers and those who like to stroll. Watch for the distinct clusters of the high bush cranberry along the trail. Just down the road The Crown and Beaver Pub on Lakeshore Drive serves up some ridiculously scrumptious burgers and a pretty amazing mac & cheese.

Head up Highway 11 North to the Black Forest Trail to hike amongst the towering red pines. The blanket of pine needles on the forest floor are a beautiful backdrop for your fall family photos. La Vase Portages Conservation Area hiking trails are a lesser known network of trails on the outskirts of North Bay accessed off Highway 17. The land trails follow the La Vase Portages connecting Trout Lake to Lake Nipissing and used for thousands of years by our ancestors that didn’t have the privilege of alternative pathways!

Laurier Woods Conservation Area – Photo credit: Northeastern Ontario Tourism

A late fall hike at family-friendly Laurier Woods Conservation Area is the place to see the active beaver colony busying for winter collecting and storing food. The tamarack trees display their golden glow in late fall and the cattails reach their height along the boardwalks.  The Orange Trail takes you to all the best sights with a quick side trip on the Purple Trail to the beautiful Michael’s bridge to watch the turtles sunning on the logs before they burrow deep into the bottom of the pond to hibernate for the winter. A harvest inspired pizza from Arugula made fresh in their wood-fired oven is the perfect end to an afternoon on the trails.

You’ll need more than a day to explore Northern Ontario’s most colourful season. Cozy up at one of the North Bay’s quaint and comfortable hotels that you can find through Tourism North Bay accommodation search. Local tip – Hampton Inn has great views of the escarpment!

The splendor of a November hike with the backdrop of a golden tamarck stand

Long after the first frost has singed the tender greens and felled the flaming red leaves off the maple trees, a second insurgence takes hold in our northern forests that transforms nature’s pallet. November heralds in the spectacular golden hue of the tamarack in North Bay and reveals a hidden world unseen in the warmer months.

Set against the dark backdrop of the evergreens, the tamarack’s deep golden-yellow glow is a picture-perfect reason to keep hiking boots ready to explore the local trails. When on the hunt for the best Instagram-worthy trees, it’s good to know that tamarack, also known as American Larch is a member of the pines family so it thrives in poor soils like are found at the edge of swamps and bordering wetlands. The tree’s wet feet make the wood extremely resilient and is the reason our Indigenous ancestors used its roots for snowshoes and to stitch together birch-bark canoes. In fact, the word akemantak is an Algonquian name for tamarack and means “wood used for snowshoes”.  Laurier Woods in North Bay, the Cranberry Trail in Callander and the Loudon Peatland Trail at Mashkinonje Provincial Park are all great trails that showcase beautiful tamarack stands.

Glacial erratic on the Forgotten Trails Association’s Tower Trail near South River

Another marvel of a late Fall hike is the undulating landforms and rock formations revealed in the leafless forest, unseen in the summer months when thick foliage gets in the way. One can only imagine the enormous sheet of ice over 1 km thick that crushed the earth during the Ice Age, carving into the hard granite of the Canadian Shield and creating hills and depressions as it advanced and melted back many times over the millennia. As the glaciers retreated for good, they acted like giant bulldozers plowing the land while carrying and polishing boulders and other materials along the way. Large boulders known as glacial erratics were scattered seemingly at random as the glaciers melted and can be seen on many of the local trails like the Corbeil Nature Trail at the Corbeil Conservation Area or, pictured here, the Laurier Tower Trail near South River.

Golden Glow along the Laurentian Escarpment Trails

It’s important to remember that here in Northern Ontario we have a rich culture of hunting and gathering. As the Fall winds blow, the exodus from the urban centre begins as many northerners enjoy the solitude of backcountry hunt camps and wandering across Crown lands in search of game. With many of our favourite trails on public lands where hunting is permitted staying visible while sharing this precious resource is a critical part of safely experiencing the local trails. It’s important to follow a few tips when getting out to wander.

  1. Be aware of hunting seasons in the area. Dates change year-to-year and vary district to district. A good rule of thumb is to assume you are not alone on Crown lands and that hunters may be present any time after mid-October. Check with the MNR for specific dates.
  2. Wear brightly coloured clothing – hunter orange is best. Avoid wearing white, especially white mittens or hats. These can appear as a deer’s tail through the trees!

Fall hiking trails with your dog in North Bay

  1. Don’t forget Fido! A brightly colored vest or sweater is not just a fashion statement – dogs can easily be mistaken for a forest dweller. Many local trails require dogs to be leashed but even if not it is always a good idea on any trail.
  2. Stay on official, marked trails. This is not the time to go geocaching or bushwacking.
  3. Make noise. Sing, carry a bell or chat loudly with your companion to scare off the deer – and hunters.

In the timeless words of Henry David Thoreau, “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” So true is November, not to be forgotten as a great time to lace up your boots and embrace the peaceful solitude of the forest.

Farmers and Chefs from Thunder Bay to Ottawa to Sarnia Celebrating Ontario Garlic Week

Ontario Garlic Week October 29 through November 7, 2021

Interviews available with Ontario Garlic Week Founder Peter McClusky

Food and beverage establishments across the province are celebrating Ontario garlic with local garlic farmers during the inaugural Ontario Garlic Week. Restaurants, chocolatiers, breweries, theatres and drive-ins are preparing the best they have to offer to celebrate the universally loved bulb.

Garlic farmers are supplying garlic by the armful, from the hot, spicy Rocambole variety, to the sweet caramel flavour of Purple Stripe garlic.

“Covid made it logistically challenging to put on a large-scale event,” says Ontario Garlic Week founder Peter McClusky, and author (Ontario Garlic: The Story from Farm to Festival) “ I thought, why not do an event that includes restaurants across the province and invite garlic farmers to supply the garlic. The farmers didn’t hesitate for one minute and that’s how Ontario Garlic Week was born.”

There are more than 100 participating food establishments creating dishes inspired by the robust flavour of Ontario garlic and selling it to patrons via dine-in, patio, take-out or delivery. From the Temiskaming shores, L’Autochtone Taverne Americaine is serving Confit Garlic Frybread with Black Truffle Compound Butter, while the head chef at Beefcake’s Burger in Thunder Bay boasts that their House Caesar salad dressing is, “one third puréed roasted garlic,” with garlic sourced from a nearby farm.

But savoury food is just the beginning. Visitors to Ontario establishments during Ontario Garlic Week will also discover novel but delicious treats such as caramelized roast garlic butter tarts and Black Garlic Stout.

Restaurants register for free, thanks to the generous support from Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, Live
Green Toronto, Maple Leaf Sports &
Entertainment, Ontario Beef,

McCormick and Pfenning’s Organic. During Ontario Garlic Week daily online contest prizes include Leafs and Raptors tickets, grill kits, spice blends and Ontario garlic.

Garlic lovers across the province will find a nearby location with the online Garlic map at www.torontogarlicfestival.ca. Also featured in the map are 200 farmers’ markets, farms and stores to buy fresh Ontario garlic.

North Bay Film Festival is BACK!

The North Bay Film Festival is back for its 5th year, with both virtual and in-person events!

Festival Friday (November 12th) will kick off with a virtual celebration of the work of filmmaker Jules Koostachin, an award-winning filmmaker and a band member of Attawapiskat First Nation.

Festival Friday will also feature North Bay Film’s first in-person event in nearly two years: a screening of Mogul Mowgli at North Bay’s historic Capitol Centre theatre. Starring Riz Ahmed, Mogul Mowgli follows Zed, a rapper on the brink of his first international tour. Zed decides to fly home to the UK to visit the family he has not seen in two years. But in the midst of trying to reconnect with his parents, he’s suddenly struck down by an autoimmune disease. With his condition worsening and his big breakthrough on the line, Zed is plunged into a physical and emotional crisis, amplified by vivid hallucinations. Tickets for the film are just $10 and can be purchased at the Capitol Centre box office. It’s a film you won’t want to miss!

Mogul Mowgli

Festival Saturday (November 13th) will see virtual screenings of two films. First, the documentary Dear Future Children, following young female activists in Hong Kong, Chile and Uganda. And then the comedy Summertime, set over the course of a hot summer day in Los Angeles. Saturday evening, the documentary Five Bucks at the Door will be playing at Gateway City Brewery

Five Bucks at the Door is the deeply personal debut film by local filmmaker Kirsten Kosloski. This film tells the story of Crocks N Rolls, a bar in Thunder Bay that, in spite of its location (or perhaps because of it), became one of the country’s premiere live music venues during the heyday of indie rock. Crocks became a bridge for musicians criss-crossing their way across the country, and a home for music-loving misfits in those pre-internet days. Director Kirsten Kosloski will be on hand for a live Q&A after the screening. Tickets for the film are just five bucks and will be available at—you guessed it—the door. Space will be limited, so you’ll want to come early.

 Five Bucks at the Door

Festival Sunday (November 14th) will see the return of the North Bay Film Festival’s Trivia Brunch, hosted once again by Super Fun Time Trivia Koal and Kevin, at the Moose Cookhouse. You can then catch virtual screenings of four more films. These include Best Sellers, starring Michael Caine as a cranky, retired author on a final book tour, and Aubrey Plaza as his young publisher. And Undine, an award-winning film about a historian in modern-day Berlin, betrayed by the man she loves, who learns she must kill him and return to the water, in a reimagining of the German myth.

Undine

The closing film of the festival will be Wildhood, the acclaimed new film by Bretten Hannam. In Wildhood, a rebellious two-spirit teenager runs away from home to find his birth mother and reclaim his Mi’kmaw heritage.

Wildhood

All virtual screenings for this year’s festival will be FREE to enjoy (though a donation would be appreciated and super cool). The two in-person screenings will require purchased tickets so make sure you grab those quick. A full schedule of events can be found on the festival website: www.northbayfilmfestival.ca
